IPL- the extravaganza of emotions
The Indian Premiere League, attracting the eyeballs of cricket lovers for its limitless entertainment as well as making all the noise or news, with much of its positive and negative issues, had been an eventful 10 years of journey so far. As its 11th season is nearing, and I believe that I can write moderately well on the topics, hence I have to share my memories as well as emotions floating around these seasons of the IPL from the last 10 years.
My school vacations during the months of April and May were running quite normally until the year of 2008 and then came the IPL. Since it was around the time of my vacations, it made it much more cheerful than the previous years. With the little knowledge I knew of cricket, I used to watch it mostly for the glamour of it. The most fascinating factor of the IPL was that it involved most of the big time players of the cricketing world playing for different teams which are named after metropolitan cities of India. This feature also pulled a lot of crowd to the stadiums as well as grabbed audiences to their TV sets. Since then, It had showed us the best versions of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Brendon McCullum, David Warner, Rahul Dravid, M.S.Dhoni, Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, AB De Villiers and other batsmen, as it turned out to be a batsman’s game. Also the role of IPL in successfully building up the career of many Indian domestic talents such as Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and few others is really commendable. Along with that, not denying the fact that this platform has also helped the players such as Glenn Maxwell, Ashish Nehra, Corey Anderson and others to reinvent themselves and find a good career in their respective national teams.
Switching favourites according to how strong they seemed to me from season 1 to season 3 and thereafter being a constant follower of a particular team, having IPL-centred discussions with friends, poking fun at them when their favourites lose matches, and drama created at home in order to get TV remote from our parents to tune in Sony Max, playing various fantasy IPL games online, sometimes fighting for your favourite team, fights turning ugly, losing friendships for few days, only to get them back in the end, all of these are attached to that wonderful memories IPL used to bring with it. There were also some uneasy times during the journey of IPL which shattered the cricket fans like me. Be it the allegations of spot-fixing incidents, teams getting banned from the game, and other similar incidents, all these remained as black dots in the history of IPL. Besides all these negative remarks, why IPL still remain as the giant is because of the magnitude and aura of the game and the entertainment it brings to the audience. The Indians’ love for cricket is just beyond words.
So today, as awaiting the season 11 of IPL, ‘The Best vs Best’- as they are branding it, it is not just a tool of entertainment for me anymore. But, I can learn more about the advertisements which they screen during the season; I can visit various cricket websites for good a analysis on the game by veterans, and also can look into the things that happen between the lines, all thanks to the over exposure from the media. The next 2 months is going to be filled with thrills, fights (of course), joys and disappointments- totally an eventful one with the massive extravaganza of emotions. So, let’s enjoy, fingers crossed.
