Thoughts on the memory of Mahatma
There was a time when I was a hard-core Gandhi hater, maybe because of lack of knowledge and getting influenced by a strong wave (which is there everywhere still now) to erase him from the history. Later I started to read him, watched the film and now I know what a gem of a person he was.
Getting influenced in gandhian ideologies, recently I went to my grandfather, who is in his 100th year now and was a small part of freedom struggle, and just asked him, "Was Gandhi really a good man?"
"Ayyo, was that a question? He is a GREAT man, I remember us walking miles when he visited this place, just to see him once", grandfather uttered it before switching to other topic of discussion. This one sentence of Ajja gave me the entire picture of admiration and respect that his generation had for Gandhi.
So my generation has never seen Gandhi alive, never seen freedom struggle and sacrifices, but just have third man accounts, i.e., history. 2 days back, I saw a meme in one of my friend's WhatsApp story showing both Gandhi and Bhagat Singh's photographs and calling Bhagat Singh a 'Hero' and Gandhi a 'Zero'. I thought of bashing my friend asking him how much he knows about the freedom struggle, but suddenly the surroundings and happenings have striked, making me realise of current scenario. I atleast have the privilege of asking my Ajja(grandpa) about Gandhi, but many like my friend won't have this privilege to know Gandhi by first hand accounts. So the crooked minds around can easily make thousands like my friend, to fall in their larger propaganda just like me couple of years before. Independent thinking is not everyone's cup of tea, people behind propaganda knows it so runs their business.
